West Virginia University

About Us

Web Services supports the WVU Internet web site, the WVU Intranet, and the Mountaineer Information Express (MIX), the student intranet.

The WVU internet site was revised in August 2003. Web Services is in the planning stages of redesigns for many department pages. These changes allow for better navigation, shorter loading times, easier management of information, and a move to Web 2.0 designs. Many changes are yet to come as Web Services begins the task of restructuring a multitude of pages. Keep your eyes open for more improvements in the future.

A new feature is the calendar with multiple categories that display to the front page and event locations that are linked to the campus map. The current homepage design reflects a segment of the Flying WV,which is the logo for West Virginia University within the design. The new pages are designed to “guide the future student” to the New Student Communication Portal. Housing, and general questions about West Virginia University. The rollover menu allows the ability to display more links in a small area to the vast number of links.

In August of 2003 Web Services also moved to a new web server that is managed by Web Services. Originally, the Office of Information Technology had managed the server. For more information about obtaining an account on the WVU web server, please contact web_services@mail.wvu.edu. Please check out the Developer Resources if you are a web developer at WVU.

The New Student Communication Portal premiered in September of 2005. The new portal is often a student’s first touch to the University. Students can personalize so that WVU can keep in communication with them. Future students can apply online, speak to an admissions counselor through Instant Messenger, read profiles about current students, faculty and alumni and surf their way through the admissions process. Shortly after this, the Online Visitors Registration allowed families to register at their convenience for a visit to WVU. Overall these efforts have boosted enrollment numbers and applications to the University.

Another project called WVU Downloads most recently landed on the WVU site. It is a smashing hit with large numbers of users finding that they can put the Mountaineers on their desktop, watch a WVU commercial or download a sound clip to their favorite MP3 player. New features include podcasts of the School of Journalism’s WVU News shows, a selection of WVU commercials and special event videos, and clips of popular songs by the WVU Marching Band. New screensavers and wallpapers are also available.

Making another big splash are blogs. The Question is the first blog and is owned by the Philosophy Department. This blog already made its way to an article by Sports Illustrated. Another blog chronicles the study abroad experience of WVU students. If a department is interested in a blog, please read more under Policy and Guidelines. Individual blogs will not be sponsored by UAM at this time.

The WWW policy is in the process of revision at this time. If you have questions, concerning policy issues please give us a call at 304-293-5305 or 304-293-5275.

The WVU Intranet site – available only to faculty, staff, and students on the WVU network – provides information, forms, and policies relevant to faculty and staff. The WVU Intranet site was revamped by Web Services in July of 2003. The valuable electronic access to these resources reduces the amount of paper used and time spent on document retrieval. Important faculty and staff announcements are also posted on the Intranet, eliminating excess e-mail to employees.

The Mountaineer Information Express, or MIX, is the new student platform which provides services to WVU students and faculty through the Internet. Students now have access to a Web-based e-mail system, so they can check their mail from anywhere, at any time. MIX also sends targeted personal announcements and relays campus announcements. There are clever features such as a chat, message board, and course pages for each class. The calendar system allows students to keep track of project dates and test schedules. Campus events keep students informed of academic and athletic events, while faculty members enjoy automated e-mail lists for every course they instruct.

The introduction of MIX changed e-mail addresses for each student and faculty. Student e-mail addresses end with “mix.wvu.edu”.

Questions about MIX can be sent to mix@mail.wvu.edu.
